The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago and a province of Ecuador located in the northeast part of the South Pacific Ocean, and on the the equator. The archipelago is made up of 127 islands, islets and rocks, including around forty volcanic islands. The entire local population is concentrated on the islands of Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal, Isabela and Floreana. The Galapagos National Park and the Galapagos Marine Reserve constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fauna is unique in the national park, each island contains its specific fauna and the underwater fauna, protected by the Galápagos marine reserve, is also exceptional by its diversity.
